Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga – The Lady is a Tramp

Anthony Dominick Benedetto (born August 3, 1926),[1] known professionally as Tony Bennett, is an American singer of traditional pop standards, big band, show tunes, and jazz. He is also a painter, having created works under the name Anthony Benedetto that are on permanent public display in several institutions. He is the founder of the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, Queens, New York.[3]

Born and raised in Astoria to an Italian-American family, Bennett began singing at an early age. He fought in the final stages of World War II as a U.S. Army infantryman in the European Theater. Afterward, he developed his singing technique, signed with Columbia Records and had his first number-one popular song with “Because of You” in 1951. Several top hits such as “Rags to Riches” followed in the early 1950s. He then refined his approach to encompass jazz singing. He reached an artistic peak in the late 1950s with albums such as The Beat of My Heart and Basie Swings, Bennett Sings. In 1962, Bennett recorded his signature song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”. His career and his personal life experienced an extended downturn during the height of the rock music era.

Bennett staged a comeback in the late 1980s and 1990s, putting out gold record albums again and expanding his reach to the MTV Generation while keeping his musical style intact. He remains a popular and critically praised recording artist and concert performer in the 2010s. He has won 19 Grammy Awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Award, presented in 2001) and two Emmy Awards, and was named an NEA Jazz Master and a Kennedy Center Honoree. Bennett has sold over 50 million records worldwide.

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta[a] (born March 28, 1986), known professionally as Lady Gaga, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She is known for her unconventionality and provocative work as well as visual experimentation.

Gaga began her musical career performing songs at open mic nights and school plays. She studied at Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21) through New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts before dropping out to become a professional musician. After Def Jam Recordings canceled her contract, Gaga worked as a songwriter for Sony/ATV Music Publishing, where Akon helped her sign a joint deal with Interscope Records and his own label KonLive Distribution in 2007. She rose to prominence the following year with her debut album, a dance-pop and electropop record titled The Fame, and its chart-topping singles “Just Dance” and “Poker Face”. A follow-up EP, The Fame Monster (2009), featuring the singles “Bad Romance”, “Telephone”, and “Alejandro”, also proved successful.

Gaga’s second full-length album Born This Way (2011) explored electronic rock and techno. The album topped the US Billboard 200 and sold more than one million copies in the country during its first week. Its title track became the fastest selling song on the iTunes Store with over a million downloads in less than a week. Gaga ventured into R&B and disco with her third album Artpop (2013), which topped the US charts and included the single “Applause”. In 2014, she released a jazz album with Tony Bennett titled Cheek to Cheek, her third consecutive number one album in the US. For her acting work in the television series American Horror Story: Hotel (2015–2016), Gaga won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in 2016. Her fifth studio album, Joanne (2016), incorporated genres such as country and pop, and she became the first woman to have four US number one albums in the 2010s when it topped the country’s charts. In February 2017, Gaga performed the Super Bowl LI halftime show, which was met with critical acclaim.

Having sold 27 million albums and 146 million singles as of January 2016, Gaga is one of the best-selling music artists in history. Her achievements include several Guinness World Records, three Brit Awards, six Grammy Awards, and awards from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Gaga has been declared Billboard’s Artist of the Year and included among Forbes’s power and earnings rankings. She was ranked at number four on VH1’s Greatest Women in Music in 2012, finished second on Time’s 2011 readers’ poll of the most influential people of the past ten years, and was named Billboard’s Woman of the Year in 2015. She is known for her philanthropic work and social activism, including LGBT rights, and for her non-profit organization, the Born This Way Foundation, which focuses on promoting youth empowerment and combating bullying.

Laguna Woods Village has approximately 18,500 residents and is convenient to nearby shopping, houses of worship and cinemas, and complete recreation and social facilities. It is a gated community for active adults, where one occupant is required to be 55 years of age or older. A full-time staff of carpenters, plumbers, painters and gardeners perform maintenance and landscaping, allowing residents time to enjoy life.

The community offers numerous planned activities and over 250 community clubs and organizations. Residents have use of the finest community facilities, including seven distinct clubhouses, one of which contains an 814-seat theater. In addition, there is a golf driving range, practice putting greens, and a chipping area. The tennis complex is one of the most modern in all of Southern California, with its own clubhouse. There are ten tennis courts and four paddle tennis courts. The equestrian center is second to none in all of Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. Here residents can board a horse or rent one for a nominal fee.

The community owns and operates its own cable television network. Village Television provides daily local origination programming to the Laguna Woods Village community, covering community news, highlights of community events, feature stories, and entertainment programs, as well as live broadcasts of homeowner’s association meetings and live broadcasts of the Laguna Woods City Council meetings on Channel 31.

Can You Persuade Your Aging Parent Move To Assisted Living?

My mother in law, Alice is 93 and has been living independently for years, since becoming a widow. We’ve been a bit worried about her for some time. We thought she’d be better off with help nearby but she was not about to let her kids tell her what to do. Gentle persuasion was met with firm resistance.

My husband, Mikol Davis, a psychologist for decades, knows well how to put things tactfully and gently to people and with Mom, he tried. “What do you think about checking out a few places where you’ll have people around you, Mom?” he asked. “And be with a bunch of old people??” she retorted. Nope, no way. 93 in her mind, you see, isn’t really old.

grandmawithgranddaughter

But with some reluctance, she did go with him to explore a few independent and assisted living communities near her home. She had been living in the big house she had shared with her husband of 62 years, in the desert, which they both enjoyed. It was lovely and the seniors’ community had every amenity. As long as you’re with a partner and can drive, it’s fine. Widowhood, though, brought many challenges she didn’t expect. Couple friends excluded her. She became isolated in the evenings as she doesn’t drive at night. Loneliness was a frequent visitor. Still she forged on, bravely adapting to living alone.

Eventually, she agreed to give up the big house and move to a smaller rental place in the same neighborhood. That was her alternative to moving into an apartment in a place “with all those old people” such as assisted living. It was great to sell off or donate so much she did not need or use. It saved us from having to choose for her what to keep and what to lose. She was in charge. The great little rental house worked for about a year and a half. Gradually, Alice began to have more difficulty with chores like shopping, getting things repaired, walking with those bad knees. Age was taking its toll.

We didn’t pressure her to move into a more protected environment, but we did encourage her to think about. One day, she just decided to do it! She announced this without prompting. We were stunned. We know how lucky we are that her mind is clear, as we see all too many who have aging parents with dementia in our work at AgingParents.com.

We asked her how she made the decision. Here’s a brief video of her thoughtful response. If you are trying to get an aging parent to think about moving to a seniors’ community, feel free to share this!

She made up her own mind in her own time to do what we hoped she would do. She is moving closer to her daughter in a place far from the desert but in the area where she raised her kids. She has decided to give up driving, as the facility provides rides to the doctors and such. And her daughter is close enough to pitch in when needed. Wow, no resistance. We can hardly believe it!

All we can say is “what a relief!” We’ll keep you posted on the transition. Meanwhile, we are counting our blessings about her wise decision. We are better off than a lot of our friends whose parents are living precariously alone. Here’s hoping Alice’s smarts will inspire some other aging parents, too.

Use subheads to improve readability and gather interest

Here you can begin to describe the underlying causes of the problem you have the solutions to, using persuasive arguments and great storytelling, and readers will have no choice but to read more.

  • Tell a great story, but don’t over-write it. Be authentic!
  • Use internal cliffhangers to entice readers to read more.
  • Use a great image to make an impression on readers from the start.

Subheads draw readers’ attention to your call to action
